This is an amazing true story that makes an impression that stayed with me for days after reading the final page. I literally couldn’t put it down. Sad and uplifting at the same time, it captured the spirit and strength of two individuals determined to survive in the face of unbelievably tragic circumstances. In her poem “Leaving”, Joan Seliger Sidney writes, “Though you mean Zurawno, your world so small, every town becomes Zurawno.” While our relatives may have lived in other towns, in other countries, their emotions and experiences during the Shoah were no doubt very similar to those of the Jews of Zurawno. Many did not live to bear witness, but this book is a lasting memorial to all who perished and and a legacy to all who survived. Highly recommended!
Thank you so much for sharing this powerful and hauntingly poignant story. I was hot, cold, hungry, terrified, and everything in between as I read the words that I could easily imagine coming out of my Bubbe’s or Zayde’s mouths. This book reminded me that, if we are not diligent about knowing, remembering, and documenting our own family histories as well as those of all the Jewish people, they will be lost forever. Since I have read this story, I have begun to put together the pieces of my own family’s journey and, amazingly, they are from a small Ukrainian town called Shepetovka not too far from Zurawno! Thank you for getting me started on this amazing journey.
I heard about this project from a friend and can’t wait to read the book! It is really important that true stories of the Holocaust come out so we never, never forget!
